Divisional rankings: Two division champ Jackie Nava retires after win; new No. 1 at 122 pounds

0

One of the best fighters in the history of the sport decided to retire — finishing with one last win Saturday night.

Junior featherweight Jackie Nava (40-4-4, 16 KO) held the WBC junior featherweight title twice — from May 2005 to May 2006 and again from September 2014 until 2015. Nava was also the WBA bantamweight title holder in 2005 and the junior featherweight champion from 2012-2016.

She had not lost a fight in the final decade of her career — her last defeat coming by unanimous decision to Ana Marie Torres on July 30, 2011. Her last major fight came last year when she beat Mariana Juarez by unanimous decision in Tijuana.

That was also the site of her final fight Saturday, another unanimous decision win over Gloria Elena Yancaqueo. She’ll finish her career as ESPN’s No. 1 junior featherweight, but she’ll also be removed from the rankings, with Yamileth Mercado taking over the No. 1 spot and the rest of the division shuffling.

Top Rank Boxing is now on ESPN and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ to get exclusive boxing events, weigh-ins and more.

Saturday, Oct. 15, 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+: Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall, 10 rounds, for the undisputed middleweight championship; Mikaela Mayer vs. Alycia Baumgardner, 10 rounds, for Mayer’s WBO and IBF women’s junior lightweight titles and Baumgardner’s WBC women’s junior lightweight title

At junior bantamweight, Asley Gonzalez Macias (15-2, 7 KO) pulled a massive upset in a unanimous decision win over former ESPN No. 1 in the division Lourdes Juarez (34-3, 4 KO) to win the WBC title.

It was Juarez’s first loss since April 26, 2014, when she dropped a split decision to Brisa Hernandez. The loss snapped a 31-fight win streak for Juarez.

Before Saturday, Gonzalez Macias’ last four opponents had all been under-.500 in their careers — so we aren’t ranking her too high. But we will push her to No. 4, ahead of Juarez, who drops to No. 5.

Last Friday night, Montserrat Alarcon (18-4-2) beat Brenda Martinez (4-4-1, 1 KO) to defend her WBA atomweight title for the third time. She remains the clear number one in the division.

This week is full of boxing. Saturday sees intriguing prospects fight as undefeated Ellie Scotney (5-0) faces Mary Romero (8-2, 2 KO) on the Chris Eubank Jr.-Conor Benn undercard in England. On the same card, former WBA bantamweight champion Shannon Courtenay (7-2, 3 KO) re-enters the ring for the first time since losing her title on the scales 363 days earlier and then lost a majority decision to current WBA champion Jamie Mitchell the next day.

In California, 20-year-old Gabriela Fundora (8-0, 4 KO) has her first 10-round fight against Naomi Arellano Reyes (9-1, 5 KO) on the undercard of her brother Sebastian’s main event. It’s Reyes’ first pro fight outside Mexico.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
